US Supreme Court Mulls Republican Bid to Defend Trump Immigration Rule
U.S. Supreme Court justices on Wednesday struggled over whether to let Republican state officials defend an immigration rule crafted by former President Donald Trump’s administration to bar permanent residency for immigrants deemed likely to need government benefits. The justices heard oral arguments in an appeal by 13 Republican state attorneys general led by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich of a lower court’s ruling that rejected their bid to defend Trump’s rule, which expanded the scope of those considered likely to become a “public charge.” President Joe Biden’s administration dropped the government’s defense of the policy, prompting the action by the states. Does a teacher’s ability to mention sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom pose a threat to primary school students or further a well-rounded, inclusive educational experience? Americans are confronting the question as initiatives advance in several states that would muzzle public school teachers on LGBTQ-related topics. In Florida, a state legislative panel recently approved the Parental Rights Education Bill, which has the backing of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. US Airlines Show Rebound in Passenger Levels
The U.S. Department of Transportation reported Monday that the number of passengers traveling on U.S. airlines rebounded last year, rising 83% compared to 2020. But the preliminary data showed the airlines are still not back to their pre-pandemic levels. The airlines carried more than 303 million passengers in 2021, 246 million fewer than in 2019, a gap of 27%. At the height of pandemic-related air travel disruptions, the number of passengers carried by U.S. airlines was down by 60% overall. Автомобіль бізнесмена Ярославського збив на смерть людину, а він вилетів у Лондон
Вночі 10 лютого на трасі Чугуїв – Мартове автомобіль збив на смерть чоловіка, на місці ДТП знайшли автомобільні номери з кортежу бізнесмена Олександра Ярославського. Міжнародний шахрай коломойський намагається приватизувати Батьківщину-Мати в Києві
Пов’язана з колишнім головою Офісу президента Андрієм Богданом компанія бореться в судах за право приватизувати нерухомість національного меморіального комплексу “Батьківщина-Мати”. Господарський суд столиці ухвалив рішення, яке по суті дозволяє його приватизацію. Компанія “Архітектурна майстерня Інка” у 2015 році уклала договір із Фондом держмайна щодо оренди зазначеного активу. Згідно з договором, на той момент приватизація цих об’єктів була заборонена за жодних умов. У грудні 2020 року орендар звернувся до Господарського суду Києва з вимогою визнати договір недійсним та дозволити їм приватизацію частини меморіального комплексу. Фактичним власником ТОВ “Архітектурна майстерня Інка” до 2018 року був ексадвокат Ігоря Коломойського та ексголова Офісу президента Андрій Богдан, а згодом нинішній народний депутат Микола Сольський. Working Conditions for US Border Patrol Getting More Attention
A strained Border Patrol is getting increased attention from the Biden administration after tense meetings between senior officials and the rank and file while the agency deals with one of the largest spikes in migration along the U.S.-Mexico border in decades. US Agencies Probe Migrant Exploitation in Alabama Chicken Industry
At least three federal agencies last year began investigating working conditions for migrants in this growing southern hub for the U.S. poultry industry, according to people familiar with the probes. The agencies have been looking for evidence of exploitation of Hispanic migrants in the area after an unusually large number of unaccompanied minors were released from federal shelters to sponsor families here last year, these people told Reuters. A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services probe focused on whether minors were falling victim to traffickers exploiting them for labor, three sources familiar with the investigations said. While investigators have discovered no evidence of child trafficking, they found “exploitative” working conditions for some migrants, the sources added, without providing more details. The U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, for their part, have also investigated staffing and work conditions in the area, people familiar with those probes told Reuters. Bill Aims to Remove US Immigration Courts from Executive Branch
Immigration judges have long urged Congress to pass legislation to make the immigration court system an independent entity sheltered from the policy agendas of any given administration. For the first time, a concrete effort is underway on Capitol Hill to make that happen and that could also address a record-high backlog of immigration cases. Democratic legislators introduced the Real Courts, Rule of Law Act of 2022, which would take the courts out of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and restructure them into an independent immigration court system set up by Congress under Article I of the U.S. Constitution. Police Arrest Man in Colorado Over Alleged Threats to UCLA
A man who allegedly threatened the University of California, Los Angeles, and detailed potential violence against the prominent university over hundreds of pages has been taken into custody in Colorado following a standoff Tuesday. The man — identified as Matthew Christopher Harris, 31 — was taken into custody Tuesday morning and is being held in Colorado on state charges after a standoff with police in Boulder. Federal charges may be pursued. It wasn’t immediately known if Harris had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. Authorities were searching his Boulder apartment. “Upon reviewing parts of the manifesto, we identified thousands of references to violence, stating things such as killing, death, murder, shootings, bombs, schoolyard massacre in Boulder and phrases like ‘burn and attack Boulder outside of the university,’” Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said at a news conference Tuesday. Several Black Colleges Receive Bomb Threats for Second Day
Several historically Black colleges and universities, known as HBCUs, received a second round of bomb threats Tuesday following similar threats on Monday. Among those receiving threats Tuesday were Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia in Washington; Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida; Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky; Fort Valley State in Fort Valley, Georgia; Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana; Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia; and Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. The threats again resulted in canceled classes and shelter-in-place orders. There have been no explosions and no word of any bombs found.
